Ippocalyptica Corpse Garden first put Costa Rica on the map for me as a source of quality extreme metal, but Umbra Conscientia - which shares at least one member with Corpse Garden - is solidifying its status in this regard. Whereas Corpse Garden is death metal made far more interesting due to its experimental elements, Umbra Conscientia is black metal made all the better by its sheer aggression and phenomenal sense of dynamics. This is black metal that bludgeons more than it cuts, and it hits very hard. Favorite track: Yellowing of the Lunar Consciousness.

Metallurgical Fire This will knock you flat! I’ve heard comparisons to Funeral Mist but I like these guys a lot more. Favorite track: Romance of Contradictions.

Late 90's BM worship, but it's also a lil more than that. This album takes the best elements from the scene it's inspired by and mostly avoids the worst of it; the song-writing is well-written, it's performed with passion and fun, and the production is raw but isn't lo-fi. (i.e. it doesn't obfuscate and/or suckass). Tl;dr It's safe but high quality BM. Recommended. Rabbit
